125 years of beautifully designed currency, plus rare, collectable & investment coins

 Every coin tells a story…
As the only exporting mint on the African continent, we’ve become known as a world leader in the industry, and our skills have been recognised with numerous awards. Our appealing designs and exceptional craftsmanship give us global appeal, while being home to brands like the world-famous Krugerrand highlights our strong local heritage.

We’re an ISO9001 certified company and a wholly owned subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) since 1988.

We produce all circulation coins for South Africa in copper, brass, nickel, aluminium, bronze, stainless steel, as well as electroplated copper and steel.

The 2021 Krugerrand range bears the same iconic design first seen on the Krugerrand over 50 years ago. The obverse features the bust of former President Paul Kruger, while the reverse depicts a prancing springbok originally designed and engraved by Coert Steynberg.

The proof range consists of 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, 1/10oz, 1/20oz and 1/50oz 22ct gold coins, available individually (except for the 1/20oz) or as part of a set. Also included in the 2021 range are the 2oz and 1oz fine silver proof coins, which are a more accessible alternative to the classic gold coins.

The beautifully-finished proof Krugerrand coins share the same popularity as their bullion counterpart, the world’s most widely held and actively traded gold bullion coin. To celebrate the enduring value of the trusted and legendary icon, the South African Mint has been producing the coin in different metals since its 50th anniversary in 2017.

The Krugerrand was conceived in 1964 when the concept of a legal tender gold coin linked to the daily gold price was introduced in South Africa. It was however only launched in 1967. The 1oz, 22 carat gold bullion coin was originally named ‘The Trojan’, but when the official striking took place on 3 July 1967 at the South African Mint in Pretoria, it was renamed the ‘Krugerrand’.

Coin collectors keenly waiting for over two years to add the last of the Big 5 to their collection can heave a sigh of relief with the arrival of the Buffalo coins in February 2021. This year’s edition of the Big 5 features the Cape buffalo, gold, silver and platinum. Introduced in 2019, the Big 5 is a multi-year coin program featuring wildlife synonymous with Southern Africa, the Elephant, Lion, Rhinoceros, Leopard and the Buffalo.

The popular coin programme which is issued twice annually, six months apart, uses the genius coin design concept first seen with the first edition of the Big 5: the reverse of the coin features two halves of the face of the Cape buffalo and when two coins are placed next to each other a complete image of the face is formed. When multiple coins are placed next to each other, a herd of buffalos is formed.

The obverse features a breath-taking design of the Cape buffalo, which fills up much of the surface area of the coin.

The ‘South African Inventions’ theme was introduced on the Crown and Tickey coin series in 2016 to highlight globally relevant inventions and firsts by South Africans. The Retinal Cryoprobe, invented and commercialised by South African ophthalmologist and biomedical engineer Dr Selig Percy Amoils is the subject of the 2020 2½c Tickey & R2 Crown collection.

Some highly-regarded South African inventions have been the focus of past Crown and Tickey coin collections. The dolos was the first invention to be depicted on this coin range, followed by the first successful human-to-human heart transplant in 2017, the Computed Tomography or CT scan in 2018, and in 2019, Pratley Putty, the world’s first epoxy adhesive which was used by NASA aboard its Ranger moon-landing craft. In 2020 we celebrated the retinal cryoprobe, invented in 1965 at Baragwanath Hospital, Africa’s largest hospital located in Soweto, Johannesburg.

The cryoprobe is a large, pen-like instrument commonly used in cryosurgery, a technique that uses extreme cold to remove abnormal or diseased tissue. The retinal cryoprobe emits analgesic nitrous oxide, at below freezing temperatures of -80oC. When inserted into a cut in the eye it freezes the cataract, which is then removed effortlessly. The procedure only targets damaged tissues without affecting any adjacent tissue.
