CONFIDENCE and CHALLENGE

The Japan Mint pledges to secure the public trust in coinage, improve the living standards of people, and meet the expectations of society, both in Japan and abroad.

The Japan Mint was established in 1871 and this year marks the Japan Mint’s 150th anniversary. Since then, it has been the national mint and the sole producer of the legal tender coins of Japan. The challenging spirit at the time of establishment lives still in mind of each of us.

Also, a new 500-yen will be introduced with the latest anti-counterfeiting technologies. The year 2021 will be a significant milestone for the history of the Japan Mint.

The Japan Mint’s headquarters is located in Osaka, and surrounded by the scenic view along the river. A passage through hundreds of cherry blossom trees next to the Mint Museum is famous as a seasonal icon in Osaka.

The branches are located in Saitama and Hiroshima and the full coin production line from melting is completed within the three facilities.

In addition to numismatic products, the Japan Mint manufactures orders and decorations with traditional techniques. They possess elements of beauty and dignity, which make them world-class works of art that we can all be proud of.

The Japan Mint has expressed the “MEMORY” with sophisticated technology and rich creativity in the products. Collectors can memorize that day and that time forever with them.

A coin is not just a media of economic exchange, but a storyteller of histories and cultures. Since 1998, the Japan Mint has organized the International Coin Design Competition (ICDC), to encourage creativity and enhance the artistry of coin design by inviting participants from all over the world.

Our numismatic items convey a delicate sense of aesthetics of traditional nation’s culture and celebrate various occasions in Japan by highlighting the highest quality and craftsmanship of the Japan Mint. Explore our products as follows.

What’s new on the Japan Mint ―Visit our Facebook page!

We have started to post in English on Facebook about not only the launch of our coin and medal programs, but many different topics about the Japan Mint that will make you feel much closer to us. Please follow us to stay up to date on our activities.

Once upon a time in the Japan Mint, 150 years ago, we were working toward establishing the modern coinage in Japan together with highly skilled foreign specialists hired by the Meiji government.

The challenging spirits 150 years ago has developed into our principle “confidence and challenge.” It has enabled us to reach the highest standard of quality in our products, and has given us the motivation to keep striving for the advancement of the global minting industry.

Last year, the Japan Mint was honored to join the World Money Fair as guest of honor and sincerely appreciates many visitors coming to our booth. We hope that this year’s fair will also be successful and fruitful for mints, dealers and all coin collectors.
