Additions to the collector series this year also include a patina-finished, non-ferrous collector coin in the shape of a rectangle, marking the 125th anniversary of the opening of the ‘Millennium Underground Railway’.
The Millennium Underground Railway opened on 2 May 1896. Construction of this underground metro line elevated the city of Budapest to world-class status, complementing its extensive tram network and three permanent bridges over the Danube. It was the first underground on the European mainland, preceding Paris and Berlin. The front of the coin depicts a contemporary blueprint of one of the stations, illustrating the covered, underground railway features. A motif recalling the decorative Zsolnay tiles from stations is presented on the back of the coin, along with the special locomotive used on this underground line.

In this edition, it will not be a single country hosting the event, but rather 13 individual cities, including Budapest where three matches will be played. We are thrilled that the Hungarian team qualified for this Championship and proud that we will be able to support them at the new stadium in Budapest named after football legend Ferenc Puskás.

The MNB developed its issuing programme for 2021 on the basis of votes and suggestions received in a public consultation procedure. In this consultation, a proposal was received to commemorate the “One with Nature” World of Hunting and Nature Exhibition, which is being held in Hungary in 2021. One of the key aims of the exhibition is to promote the protection and respect of nature and to highlight the importance of the reasonable, prudent development of civilization, by helping to raise social awareness for these issues. This series of events will help the public to better understand and appreciate nature protection efforts, the concept and purpose of the sustainable utilisation of nature, and the usefulness and importance of aspects such as hunting, game management, angling, net fishing, the management of fish stocks, forestry and forest management.
